A vestibule is a small foyer leading into a larger space, designed with the purpose of waiting, withholding the larger space view, reducing heat loss, and providing space for outdoor clothing, among other functions.
Building a second front door to the house, a place to put shoes and jackets, a drop zone for packages, and a safe place to keep pets clear from the entrance are all functions a well-designed vestibule can serve. It also helps reduce the loss of heating/cooling in the home.
